The backstory:

Kroger released its first quarter 2025 earnings on Friday, saying overall company profit "exceeded our expectations" but that the "macroeconomic environment remains uncertain."

By the numbers:

Total company sales were $45.1 billion in the first quarter compared to $45.3 billion for the same period last year.

Excluding fuel, Kroger Specialty Pharmacy and adjustment items, sales increased 3.7% compared to the same period last year, the company said.

What we know:

Kroger included in its first quarter report that it has a plan to close approximately 60 stores.

What we don't know:

Kroger didn’t give details about which stores were going to close. It was also unclear if the stores closing would be Kroger stores, or stores under different banner names.

FOX Television Stations reached out to Kroger for more information, but Kroger said it wouldn't be releasing a list of stores at this time.

Timeline:

Kroger said the planned closings would take place over the next 18 months, which would mean the closings would take place sometime between now and the end of 2026.

What they're saying:

Kroger said the store closings will give them a "modest financial benefit."

"Kroger is committed to reinvesting these savings back into the customer experience, and as a result, this will not impact full-year guidance. Kroger will offer roles in other stores to all associates currently employed at affected stores," it also said.
